Victims identified, quadruple murder suspect’s criminal past

UPDATE (June 4, 2021): We’re getting a better picture of the man accused of killing a young mom and her three kids in Fort Wayne.

Prosecutors say that 21-year-old Cohen Hancz-Barron was on electronic monitoring and living at a halfway house in Lafayette until he escaped in April. Hancz-Barron was supposed to be serving time for armed robbery.

The coroner identified the murdered children as five-year-old Carter Zent, three-year-old Ashton Zent, and two-year-old Aubree Zent. Their mother, Sarah Zent, also died in Wednesday’s killings.

Police say they found Hancz-Barron with a knife when they arrested him. The coroner’s report does detail that they four died of “multiple stab wounds.”

On Thursday, the Allen County Coroner released the following identifying the victims:

On Wednesday, June 2, 2021 at about 1045 hours, the Fort Wayne Police Department was contacted and requested at 2904 Gay Street, Fort Wayne, Indiana on a problem unknown investigation. First officers on scene entered the home and found the deceased bodies of 1 adult female, and 3 juveniles. The scene was secured and Three Rivers Ambulance Authority Medics entered into the scene and verified death. The Allen County Coroner’s Office was requested on scene.

Notification has been made to the legal next of kin of Sarah Nicole Zent, female white 26 years of age, from Fort Wayne, Indiana. An autopsy has been completed and her Cause of Death has been determined to be Strangulation and Multiple Stab Wounds, and the Manner of Death is Homicide.
Sarah Nicole Zent is the 18th Homicide for Allen County in 2021.
Notification has been made to the legal next of kin of Carter Mathew Zent, male white 5 years of age, from Fort Wayne, Indiana. An autopsy has been completed and his Cause of Death has been determined to be Multiple Stab Wounds, and the Manner of Death is Homicide.
Carter Mathew Zent is the 19th Homicide for Allen County in 2021.
Notification has been made to the legal next of kin of Ashton Duwayne Zent, male white 3 years of age, from Fort Wayne, Indiana. An autopsy has been completed and his Cause of Death has been determined to be Multiple Stab Wounds, and the Manner of Death is Homicide.
Ashton Duwayne Zent is the 20th Homicide for Allen County in 2021.

Notification has been made to the legal next of kin of Aubree Christine Zent, female white 2 years of age, from Fort Wayne, Indiana. An autopsy has been completed and her Cause of Death has been determined to be Multiple Stab Wounds, and the Manner of Death is Homicide.
Aubree Christine Zent is the 21st Homicide for Allen County in 2021
This investigation continues with the Fort Wayne Police Department, the Allen County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office and the Allen County Coroner’s Office.

UPDATE (June 3, 2021):

The suspect in a disturbing quadruple homicide is behind bars after an hours-long manhunt.

Right now, there are no answers as to why he may have killed a woman and three young children on Wednesday in a home at Gay and McKee.

Police called the killings gruesome and put out the word on the suspect. Hours later, police in Lafayette, along with officers with the FWPD, arrested 21-year-old Cohen Bennett Hancz-Barron Wednesday evening.

There is no word about how he knew or is related to the victims, their identities, and how they were killed.

After his arrest, Fort Wayne Police Department officials released the following:

Regarding the attached incident, through a joint effort between FWPD Homicide, Gang and Violent Crimes Unit, Vice and Narcotics Unit, and the Indiana State Police, Cohen Bennett Hancz-Barron has been arrested at an apartment complex in Lafayette, IN.

Cohen Bennett Hancz-Barron is being transported back to the Allen County Jail and will be facing four charges of Murder.

Fort Wayne Police Department officials now say that the man they issued a “be on the lookout” order for late Wednesday morning is suspected in the killings of a woman and three young children.

FWPD officials released the following regarding the investigation and now search for Cohen Bennet Hancz-Barron – the 21-year-old suspect in the case:

On June2, 2021 at approximately 10:45am Officers with the Fort Wayne Police Department responded to an unknown problem at the 2900 block of Gay St. While investigating this incident Officers discovered 3 murdered young children and a deceased adult female in a residence on Gay St. Preliminary investigation identified Cohen Bennet Hancz-Barron, 21 year old, bi-racial male, 6 feet 205 pounds as the suspect.

Cohen was last seen driving a black 2010 Ford F150, with tinted windows, HarleyDavidson addition with stock rims (rims have been changed from picture) with a possible license plate of “RASHAD”. If the public identifies this person or vehicle please call 911 immediately; he is considered armed and dangerous.

This incident remains under investigation by the Fort Wayne Police Department, Allen County Coroner’s Offices, and the Prosecutor’s Office.

 

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (ADAMS) – Fort Wayne Police Department officials put out word late Wednesday morning that they are looking for a man they consider armed and dangerous.

Police did not specify what Cohen Bennett Hancz-Barron is wanted for however, they asked that anyone who knows anything regarding his whereabouts call police.

FWPD officials released the following:

The Fort Wayne Police Department is looking for Cohen Bennett Hancz-Barron, 21yo male, 6 feet 205lbs.

Cohen is considered armed and extremely dangerous; anyone with information on his whereabouts is asked to call 911.

He was last seeing driving the attached black 2010 Ford truck with license plate “RASHAD” and may have recently dyed his hair red.
