FORT WAYNE, Ind. (ADAMS) – More charges may be coming after a chase and crash in Fort Wayne.
Police say that at 10:54pm on August 11, 2019, detectives with the Gang and Violent Crimes Unit were in the Villages of Hanna when they noticed a vehicle that matched the description of a vehicle possibly involved in several recent shots-fired investigations. Detectives attempted a traffic stop for a traffic infraction, at which time the driver, Travious Shepard, refused to pull over and instead chose to endanger the lives of others by leading officers on a vehicle pursuit.
As Travious drove northbound on Hessen Cassel Rd. passing Senate Ave, an officer deployed a Tire Deflation Device in an attempt to deflate the suspect vehicle’s tires and safely end the pursuit. Travious attempted to swerve to miss the Tire Deflation Device but failed and struck the device, which deflated two tires. However, swerving to avoid them caused him to lose control and crash into the Shell Gas Station sign at the intersection of Mckinnie Ave and Hessen Cassel Rd.
Travious and his adult male passenger were taken into custody without incident. Both were transported to a local hospital in serious condition but were later upgraded to ‘non-life-threatening’ condition. The passenger will not face any charges.
Because this crash occurred during a police pursuit, standard protocol dictates the activation of the crash investigation team. Crash investigators processed the scene, taking measurements and photographs. The intersection of Mckinnie Ave and Hessen Cassel Rd. remained closed during the investigation.
Anyone with any additional information is asked to contact police.
